Lal Mahal is historical palace which was built in 1636 for Shivaji Maharaj and Jijamata (Shivaji’s Mother) as a residence for them. Shivaji Maharaj stayed here for many years before conquering his first fort. Lal mahal is the place where Shivaji Maharaj cut fingers of Shaistekhan’s finger while he was running from Lal Mahal.
This red brick structure is situated in the center of city next to Shaniwarwada. In 1988, Pune Municipal Corporation renovated this structure. The famous statue of Jijamata (Shivaji’s mother) still adorns the Lal Mahal of Pune. An attractive representation in which Shivaji Maharaj plowing with golden plough and Jijamata and Dadoji Kondadev looking at them are also here along with pictorial representation of Shivaji Maharaj’s life.
